Welcome to HighRes Biosolutions
HighRes Biosolutions is the leading global laboratory automation company. Our products and people empower scientists with whole automated laboratory workflows, thus creating data factories that connect instrumentation with informatics around the world.
Our Collaborative Origins
HighRes Biosolutions was conceived by colleagues sharing ideas at a life science conference. Ideas quickly became reality when High Resolution Engineering was founded in 2004. To better align with our mission and target markets, we later changed our name to HighRes Biosolutions.
MicroDock: Our First Novel Innovation
MicroDock allows users to configure large devices (i.e. automated liquid handlers or sample storage units), or small laboratory devices grouped on carts (i.e. readers, shakers, peelers) for one scientific workflow. These devices or carts are docked to robotic arms for use when needed. Different devices or carts may be reconfigured and redocked on-the-fly as workflow requirements change.
This innovation in modular lab automation allows the laboratory configuration itself to change, thus adapting to the evolving nature of science. This accelerates overall scientific discovery and advances positive outcomes in human health.
Building Modular Automation Momentum
A handful of people at the fledgling Company pioneered the first modular automated work cells. In 2005, the first systems were installed at customer sites to support basic pharmaceutical research. Many of these early systems and system components have outlived their life expectancy and are still used in vital workflows today.
These modular automated work cells could be modified in under 30 seconds. Additionally, they enabled automatic power, data, and gas (re)connection without having to reteach the robotic arm to a device position. This groundbreaking approach to laboratory automation amplified human-robot collaboration and increased democratization across labs, particularly with expensive and rate-limiting analytical devices.
Expanding into New Realms
Today, we are a global automation brand with over 220 employees worldwide, and our application portfolio extends to every aspect of the life sciences.
We moved our North American headquarters from Woburn, Massachusetts to a state-of-the-art facility in a beautiful seaside community conveniently located about 25 miles north of downtown Boston. Here in Beverly, Massachusetts, we house our offices, assembly area, machine and electronics shops, and a spacious showroom for personalized demonstrations.
The bustling city of Manchester, England is home to our European office. Here, our automation experts offer full applications and service support by region.
Nucleus: At the Center of Automation Innovation
We continue to engineer design-forward automation solutions, including Nucleus Automation Infrastructure, our next generation modular automated solutions. Nucleus encapsulates advanced and highly modular laboratory hardware and software as an elegantly powerful central automation framework for any workflow.
Powerfully Encompassing Software
Our newest automation software offers new heights of advanced control. Cellario Whole Lab Workflow Automation Software seamlessly integrates with all individual devices and software in a laboratory, regardless of vendor or format. In essence, Cellario turns laboratories into highly functional data factories.
In an industry first, this groundbreaking software enables error recovery and protocol modification on-the-fly while ensuring that samples are treated uniformly, and critical timings are maintained.
The Future is Very Bright
As we continue to lead the market with fresh and distinctively beneficial automation innovations that support the Lab of the Future, our customers are top of mind. We pledge to support our customers in refining the laboratory automation design, make, test, and analyze (DMTA) cycle to better realize cost and time savings. We also vow to continue transforming the digital landscape so that findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable (FAIR) data are maximized to drive scientific discovery.
We are proud to have these ambitions strengthened by the support and guidance of our parent company, Axel Johnson, Inc.
